@Xylogeist your argument refers to the Community Reinvestment Act which didn't set any laws into place. the Gramm Leachy Biley Act was the deregualtion that caused this mess. Clinton claimed it would help the CRA, but the CRA did nothing. the deregulation of the banks in 1999 in relations to the Federal Reserve pinpoints the cause of this mess.

@Xylogeist well , maybe if he took issues seriously instead of drastic approaches. the Great Depression was brought about by 2 Republican presidents who allowed on-margin buying. this housing bubble happened when we stripped away those Glass Steagall regulations that restore our fiat monetary system. Paultards need to understand regulation of the banks, and what the deregulation has done to this country instead of going back to pre-1913 fairy tales.

Paul doesn't care about the Constitution at all. He opposes the 14th Amendment, he wants to end birthright citizenship, he's notoriously sketchy on the establishment clause, and he wanted to "fix" the First Amendment to ban flag-burning. He only uses the Constitution to cover up his reactionary views. No candidate in 2008 was a perfect civil libertarian (in my opinion), but you could've done a lot better than Paul.

No one ever said the war was about freeing the slaves. It was about preserving slavery until the end of time. That's what the South said when they started it, in their Cornerstone Speech and Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina declarations of secession. And people go to prison when they commit crimes. Jails are filled with criminals, not slaves. That's why we call them "criminals."

And the Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina declarations of secession cited "slave" and "slavery" eighty-two separate times, while "states rights" does not appear at all. "States rights" is an abstraction. The South cared about the states' "right" to buy, sell, rape, whip, and lynch black people until the end of time. The Free Soil Lincoln and abolitionist Republican Party threated the future of slavery, so they seceded and fired on American troops before he could even take office.

It's easy to understand why the South started the war, since they wrote it down in their Cornerstone Speech and Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina declarations of secession. Their own declarations cite "slave" and "slavery" eighty-two separate times. They don't mention "British imperialism in context of free trade," "the enlightenment," "aristocracy," "geo-politics," "social norms," "the consolidation of wealth and debt," or "agrarian v industrial society" even once.

@smo699 Facts, as John Adams said, are stubborn things. All 7 of the states that initially seceded before Lincoln took office issued statements putting forward the threat they perceived from his presidency to slavery as the major if not the sole cause of their secession. If these states don't secede & take over federal installations, there is no firing on Sumter. If there is no firing on Sumter, Lincoln doesn't call up 75K men abd the rest of the states do not secede. Slavery WAS the root cause.

@tankknopf As to the Confederacy accepting African Americans as soldiers in an act of pure desperation at the end of the war, many prominent Confederates acknowledged that it went against the core values of the Confederacy. One famously declared that if slaves seem good soldiers, then our whole theory of slavery is wrong."

@tankknopf I am not sure what the slaves owned by Grant and Lee have to do with the causes of the war, but here are the facts. Both men opposed slavery. Lee emancipated his many slaves as a consequence of the will of his father-in-law calling for that in 1862. Grant owned one slave whom he purchased from his father-in-law. He emancipated him in 1859. His wife owned a number of slaves that were freed by the 13th amendment in 1865.

@tankknopf I have plenty of accurate information as opposed to the fantasies you have just described. Seven states starting with South Carolina seceded from the Union as a direct consequence of Lincoln's election before he ever took office. As South Carolina's secession declaration makes abundantly clear, this was because of the threat Lincoln posed as president to slavery. It had nothing whatever to do with any tariff.

Mississippi did, too. They said "Our position is thoroughly identified with the issue of slavery --- the greatest material interest in the world." They said that a blow at slavery "is a blow at civilization," and that they could only secede or suffer the "degradation" of free black people:sunsite . utk . edu / civil-war / reasons . html#Mississippi

@byron84 The government creating jobs digging ditches and building bridges didn't help the great depression? The other side of the coin is when people believe in too small government to be effective to perform the jobs it needs to. Which is exactly what stagnant generational wealth loves. Why would they want a weak government? So the Ownership/investment class can continue to make money off of their grandfathers decisions, adding nothing to the society in which they try to put a collar on.

I am really wondering about AJ. Check it out, Tarpley can ramble on and on about how things are screwed up, but as soon as he talks about things we can do to lessen the depression, AJ breaks in and says 'yeah yeah you can talk about solutions all day but you know nobody will listen to you webster, now talk more about how bad things are'.I mean really. His show is all about problems or him selling something or him pumping up his ego, NEVER ABOUT SOLUTIONS.
