"Oneness Doctrine" (Jesus Only) vs. Trinitarianism
Part 4: God As A Tri-unity In The Old Testament

GOD IS SPIRIT

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

GOD IS A PERSON

God is a Being who has intellect, emotion and will:

He created: Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

He destroys: Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

He provides: Psa 145:15 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season. 16 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

He promotes: Psa 75:6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. 7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

He cares: 1 Pet 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

He hears: Psa 94:9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? 10 He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?

He hates: Prov 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

He grieves: Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

He loves: John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

GOD IS ONE

Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: 5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

GOD IS A TRI-UNITY

"Two expressions have been traditionally employed to designate certain inner relations between the Father and the Son, and the Father and the Son with the Spirit. These two expressions are, the eternal generation of the Son by the Father and the eternal spiration (or procession) of the Spirit from the Father and the Son. They began to be employed about the time of the council of Nicea (A.D. 325). They expressed in scriptural language the idea that the Son and the Spirit were eternally with the Godhead. John 1:14 refers to our Lord as the 'only begotten' of the Father. And John 14:16, 26 and 15:26 speak of the Spirit as 'proceeding from the Father and the Son."' (Robert Culver, The Living God, p. 96).

False Doctrines Concerning The Tri-unity Of God

Tri-theism: the false belief that God consists of three co-eternal Gods

Modalism: the false belief that God manifests Himself in three different modes or offices

Old Testament Passages Regarding The Trinity

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God ('elohiym) created the heaven and the earth.

Gen 1:26 And God ('elohiym) said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:

See also Genesis 3:22 and 11:17 where God is spoken of as "us." 'elohiym is used of God as a plurality:

'elohiym 430. 'elohiym, el-o-heem'; plur. of H433; gods in the ordinary sense; but spec. used (in the plur. thus, esp. with the art.) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:--angels, X exceeding, God (gods) (-dess, -ly), X (very) great, judges, X mighty.

Yehovah is used of God as His being one God:

Yehovah 3068. Yehovah, yeh-ho-vaw'; from H1961; (the) self-Existent or Eternal; Jeho-vah, Jewish national name of God:--Jehovah, the Lord. Comp. H3050, H3069.

Thus, in Deuteronomy 6, we see the One God spoken of as a plurality:

Deu 6:1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD (Yehovah) your God ('elohiym) commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
Deu 6:2 That thou mightest fear the LORD (Yehovah) thy God ('elohiym), to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
Deu 6:3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD (Yehovah) God ('elohiym) of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.
Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD (Yehovah) our God ('elohiym) is one (echad) LORD (Yehovah):
Deu 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD (Yehovah) thy God ('elohiym) with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

echad - 259. 'echad, ekh-awd'; a numeral from H258; prop. united, i.e. one; or (as an ordinal) first:--a, alike, alone, altogether, and, any (-thing), apiece, a certain [dai-] ly, each (one), + eleven, every, few, first, + highway, a man, once, one, only, other, some, together.

Echad speaks of God as being one as husband and wife are one:

Gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one (echad) flesh.

King Agur spoke of the omnipotence of God and His Son:

Prov 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?

God As The Triune Creator

Eccl 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

Isa 54:5 For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

In these verses, Creator should be translated Creators and Maker, Makers, according to Wilmington.

Isaiah's Triune Conversation With God

Isa 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Isaiah 48:16 is a powerful witness to the Tri-unity of God in the Old Testament:

Isa 48:16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

David Wrote Of The Conversations Between The Father And The Son

Psa 2:1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
Psa 2:3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
Psa 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
Psa 2:5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
Psa 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
Psa 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Psa 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
Psa 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Psa 110:2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
Psa 110:3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
Psa 110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Psa 110:5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
